Last week, Mike Gillis offered David Backes a 3 year offer sheet which the Blues matched within hours.
Today, JD and the Blues fought back and signed Steve Bernier to a 1-year, $2.5 m offer sheet... which the Canucks matched within the hour as well.
They must be LOLing down there.
MG: OH JD You got me good
JD: Hohoho, Merry Chrisstttmaaaaaaaaaas!!!
Anyway... and this makes me sound like a horrible fan, but does anybody else sort of cringe everytime you hear a player say that Vancouver is a team that will compete for the playoffs and the Stanley Cup nowadays? I mean, it's great to have all that confidence in the team, but realistically............... on paper, we look nowhere close to competing for the Cup. Competing for the playoffs, maybe (I mean... competing for the 8th spot is already competing for the playoffs)....
Yeah. Anyway.
About the Naslund fiasco.
I was in a state of shock since his signing last week. He is one of my all-time favorite Canucks, and it is just weird to not see him play all the time anymore. I don't even have NHL Center Ice to be able to regularly watch the New York Rangers, so it would be difficult to keep track of him.
As for my feelings wtih regards to this signing, oddly enough, I don't feel betrayed. I feel sad, and felt that Canucks could have made a similar offer as New York did and they would have been able to bring him back, but Gillis didn't even give him an offer. I felt happy that he is not part of this team, since the fans don't want him back, and the team definitely did not seem like they wanted him back.
I find it weird that a lot of notable Canucks players always left this team and city with some sort of bitter end.
Todd Bertuzzi got traded and he was presumably the "cancer" in the locker room, plus that Steve Moore incident.
Trevor Linden retired after playing a season which probably made him feel like he is not wanted by the coaching staff...
There's also Pavel Bure... now Markus Naslund.
This can't be good can it?
[add] In retrospect, playing for the New York Rangers really is a good thing for a family-man like Naslund. Road trips against division rivals like the Islanders and the Devils are really just a bus-ride away... he doesn't have to spend it in a hotel room somewhere, instead, he can go back to his own home and spend more time with his family.
So far? It has been depressing. It's been killing my mood during Canada Day 2 days ago. Everytime I received a text alert from TSN saying "so and so signed with so and so team" or "player traded for player 2" I get depressed and wonder "Uhh, Mike, we're running out of top 6 forwards. Offense needs help please?"
Isn't he making all the same moves Nonis was making last year???!
Blah.
Gillis transactions in no particular order
- Re-signs Curtis Sanford
- Signs Ryan Johnson
- Signs Nolan Baumgartner
- Signs Darcy Hordichuk
- Signs Alexandre Bolduc
- Signs Kyle Wellwood
Hmmm. Yeah. It's looking like the same team last year unless a few of our prospects are able to make the jump into NHL... Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews style.
Though it was funny. When I received the TSN text message with regards to David Backes being signed to a "$7.5 million" offer sheet, I thought it was "$7.5 million PER YEAR" and was totally panicking while walking around Granville Island, cursing Mike Gillis... 'WHY ARE YOU OFFERING HIM $7.5 MILLION WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT TO MALKIN IF YOU WERE PLANNING ON DOING SO"
Then I came home and heard the Blues matched and eventually found out it was through the length of the contract. LOL
But yeah. Uhm. Go Mike!
Sami Salo is now out with a sore groin.
Did a Canuck defenceman kill a kitten or something? Which is why we are getting punished by the Hockey Gods?
Hello, Hockey Gods! It wasn't the Canucks who injured the Hockey Jesus Sidney Crosby, so lay off this team already.
To (possibly) replace Salo, we have called up Luc Bourdon. He will also be joined by Mike Brown (at least the Hockey Gods are listening to this particular request) and Jason Jaffray.
Soooo let's recap
- Our D is getting murdered.
- Mike Brown > Jeff Cowan, so let's hope he replaces Jeff Cowan.
- Jason Jaffray > Matt Cooke, so let's hope he replaces Matt Cooke.
- Manitoba Moose is now a rape victim and needs to go under the Witness Protection program.
THE SKY IS FALLIIIING!!!
- Luongo says his pregnant wife is >>> All Star Game. He will also miss the home game against Dallas Stars after the All Star break and would meet with the team in Florida for their game against Tampa Bay. (@ Canucks.com)
- Henrik Sedin proves once and for all that he is the better twin and should have been the 2nd overall draft pick. (@ Canucks.com) In other news, Daniel Sedin goes on a goal scoring rampage to prove otherwise.
- Dave Nonis likes collecting players from the first round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He picked up 7th overall draft pick, Kris Beech, off of CBJ waivers. (@ Canucks.com) Is Patrik Stefan, the 1st overall draft pick, next on his list? Stay tuned.
- Aquilini still owns the Canucks. (@ The Province)
Dave Nonis signs 2 defencemen!
Canucks sign Kevin Bieksa to a 3-year extension; ($11.25 over 3 years)
Canucks sign Aaron Miller
See? He's gone insane. Over the past week he has signed 10+ players.
I don't know how to react over the Kevin Bieksa deal: On one hand, it's great he is back; the other... he's the highest paid defenceman in the team. I shouldn't complain though.. if we had waited, we'd either lose him or overpay more for him.
And with the signing of Aaron Miller, our defense corps are practically complete. I only hope Miller comes cheaper than Rory Fitzpatrick...... I complain about $ figures too much.
But yes. Our defense is sick and this is just the Top 6, I haven't even mentioned our "call-ups" yet.
You know that St. Louis Blues goalie that stoned the Canucks every. Single. Fucking. Time. ? Yep. We got him.
Canuck Killer, Curtis Sanford signs with the Vancouver Canucks. Yep. We're almost guaranteed wins against the Blues now. (Striked-through before I jinx the team)
I'm surprised he's so willing to play less than 10 games as a backup to Luongo, though. I guess for him this is more like a learning experience as he can watch Roberto Luongo and try to glean as much information from him as possible. (NO LUI! DON'T GIVE HIM YOUR SECRET CHICKEN RECIPE!!)
But yes... One would think we'll hardly see any action on the Canucks front, but they have gone bananas and signed/announced everyone today. Who's next? Foppa? Or probably a trade for another Canuck killer? Milan Hejduk, perhaps?
Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have signed goaltender Cory Schneider. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Schneider, 21, signed his first pro contract after being selected by Vancouver in the first round, 26th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The 6’2”, 195-pound native of Marblehead, MA played the last three seasons with Boston College. Among his list of accomplishments in the 2006-07 season include finishing first in the NCAA in wins, saves and minutes played, five Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honours and a NCAA NE Region Most Outstanding Player selection.
Schneider guided Boston College to the NCAA Frozen Four Final in 2006-07 with a record of 29-12-1. The backstop also helped lead his team to become Hockey East Champions with a .925 save percentage and 2.15 goals against average. Schneider’s international experience includes representing the U.S. at the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Russia, 2005 & 2006 World Junior Championship experience and a silver medal finish at the under 18 World Championship in 2003-04.
Schneider holds the Boston College record for shutouts in a single-season (8) and the single-season record for saves (1,088), both set in 2005-06. - Press Release
Canucks Sign Byron Ritchie and Brad Isbister - Press Release
Canucks Re-Sign Lukas Krajicek to a Two-year Extension - Press Release
Canucks Sign Brad Moran, Jason Jaffray, Greg Classen - Press Release 1, Press Release 2, Press Release 3
No big name signings, except for (maybe) Cory Schneider. I'm glad we didn't have the cap space to offer those ridiculous contracts to players like Daniel Briere. I have no problem with the dollars offered, but I'm more irked at the lengths of those contracts. As nice as it is to have a certain player locked at a certain salary for a long time, you can't guarantee that this player would be as good 2-3 years in the future which is why the most I ever want to see from Nonis is a 4 year contract... even that is too much.
So, apparently Dave Nonis said today in a morning interview at Team 1040 that Taylor Pyatt's salary is NOT $1.75 million, but $1.5 million plus a bit. Apparently he slammed the people who are reporting wrong information, too. (*glares at The Province*)
I'll try to download B-Mac and Rintoul's podcast today to confirm this news since I'm just going by word of mouth right now.
CANUCKS: PYATT DEAL WORTH $1.75M A SEASON
The paperwork for the Taylor Pyatt signing was processed Tuesday and his contract is worth considerably more than what was originally reported.
Pyatt will make $1.75 million US a season, the same as Ryan Kesler, which makes his two-year contract worth $3.5 million US.
The contract leaves the Canucks with 13 players signed for next year at $39,995,000 US. That doesn't include Marc Chouinard who is due $1.1 million US but finished last season in the AHL.
The league's salary cap has yet to be announced but some reports suggest it could be as high as $52 million.
Ugh. Well, at least it isn't $2.5 million or some holy overpayment. I guess it's still doable, not something I'd kill myself over.
His asking price was $1.5 million, how did it get this high??!! Oh well. Prepare to see "Pyatt for a bag of pucks" threads on CDC next year, Pyzzie.
... and the puckbunnies rejoice!!! WOOHOO.
NOT ME THOUGH. YOU'LL SEE WHY IN A COUPLE OF SECONDS!!!
Canucks Re-Sign Winger Taylor Pyatt to Two Year Extension
Mon. Jun 4, 2007Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have re-signed forward Taylor Pyatt to a two year extension.
Pyatt, 25, had a career year in just his first season with the Vancouver Canucks, setting new career highs in goals (23) and points (37) in 76 games with the club, including four game-winning markers. The Thunder Bay, Ontario-native also appeared in all 12 of Vancouver’s post-season games, notching his first career NHL playoff goal and finishing third on the team in playoff scoring with six points (2-4-6) and six penalty minutes. He also notched the game-winning goal, an overtime marker, in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarter-Final series against the Dallas Stars.
The 6’4”, 220 lbs. winger has played in 384 career NHL games, split between Vancouver, Buffalo and the New York Islanders, registering 135 points (65-70-135) and 212 penalty minutes.
Pyatt was originally a first round draft pick, 8th overall, of the New York Islanders in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by Vancouver from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a fourth round draft pick in 2007.
Well, different media outlets has been reporting that it was a deal worth just above $3 million over 2 years. I don't know. His asking price a couple of months ago was $1.5 million. I'm guessing his performance in the playoffs (which was average really, but he did score key points) jacked that price up just a bit. Rumors were also circling around that Boston was interested in Pyatt, so yeah.
:P Good deal, I guess. We're all just hoping that he gets better. WAY better. And really, all he needs is a good bit of consistency in his game and he can be a real good player. Cause when he's in his game, he usually scores goals and then you see that flash of "POWERFORWARD" in him.
ETA 1: TSN is reporting $3 million over 2 years, not $3 million +. Hmm. That's better then.
ETA 2: Changed blog layout to Pyatt trying to look like a man but failing banner to celebrate. :D
